There are several good reasons to eat a high protein diet, such as excess fat loss, blood sugar regulation and improved cardiovascular condition. It is also important to balance the protein with sufficient complex carbohydrates and essential fatty acids to obtain good health benefits. Healthy Weight Maintenance To burn fat, itis important to cut out the refined carbohydrates, white flour products and simple sugar foods, and to concentrate on eating complete proteins, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and drinking plenty of pure water. Exercise is, of course, also helpful to increasing the growth hormone, metabolism and burning excess fat. Complete protein foods like red meat, poultry, fish, egg white, dairy products, tofu and soy are important because they contain most, if not all, of the essential amino acids necessary for growth and development of all body tissues, enzymes, antibodies and hormones. Vegetables, fruit, nuts, grains and legumes all contain one or more of the amino acids but are not in themselves considered complete proteins. For the vegetarian, combining legumes and grains to make up a complete protein meal has to be done carefully to assure they body is getting a consistent supply of essential amino acids. Red meat and dairy can pose a problem for some individuals due to digestive disorders or allergies and should be avoided in those cases. Complex carbohydrates are important to add fiber to the diet plus antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. The advantage to the low glycemic index carbohydrate is they complement the high protein diet in keeping fat storage at a minimum and encouraging the burning of stored fat for fuel. Vegetable fiber is also important to keep the elimination tract working so toxins don't build up and poison the system. As for fat, we can't live healthfully without it. Good oil sources for our essential fatty acids are borage, flax, olive, nut, sesame, avocado and others. Nuts, seeds and diary products can be good sources of fats as well, but to get the most essential omega 3 and 6, taking EPA/DHA, Flax and GLA capsules is a good idea. The hydrogenated fats are the worst for us and should be avoided in our diets. In general, I think a high protein diet with lots of vegetables and essential fatty acids, plus plenty of pure water and nutrient supplementation is the way to go for weight maintenance, health and stamina.
